In the second episode of this two-part series, we arrive in Vicksburg, Mississippi, a historic town known as the site of a key Civil War battle. We continue our journey along the Mississippi River to Venice, Louisiana.

Brandon chats with Nancy Rabalais, a Professor in the Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences as well as Doug Daigle, an expert in Hypoxia research at Louisiana State University. Their ongoing research of oxygen deficiencies in the Gulf of Mexico is crucial to the understanding of the Gulf of Mexico’s Hypoxic Dead Zone.

We conclude our two-part series at the terminus of the Mississippi River in Venice, Louisiana with Captain Ryan Lambert of Cajun Fishing Adventures. Lambert has been assisting with a current project aimed at slowing the river through man-made diversions to trap nutrients and collect sediment from upstream. This effort helps build additional land while keeping nutrients out of the gulf – a potential net positive for natural habitat and aquatic wildlife.
