Native grasses and expanses of native grasslands provide critical habitat for wild turkeys and other ground nesting birds. In this episode of Prairie Prophets, Brandon sits down with Brent Vandeloecht, a Community and Private Land Unit Supervisor with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). to discuss trends in private land management and habitat restoration throughout Missouri. Vandeloecht explains how MDC can help landowners play a crucial role in wild turkey conservation.

Brandon then meets with John Burk, District Biologist for the National Wild Turkey Federation. John serves the NWTF’s mission of conservation of wild turkey and the preservation of the hunting heritage. John is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to protecting and promoting the turkey’s natural habitat.

Frank Oberle, the Godfather of North Missouri prairie gives us a lesson in prescribed fire, as we join in on a controlled burn. This practice is paramount to the success of a thriving prairie.

Finally, Brandon talks with dedicated conservationist, Steve Mowry. Steve is a landowner who has put forth tremendous efforts in various conservation organizations. He has implemented conservation practices on his own property and serves as an example to others. Steve’s knowledge of the history of wild turkey in Missouri and his love for prairie makes for the perfect fireside chat.
